National Grid Energy Efficiency Programs

National Grid offers many energy efficiency rebates, incentives, and services to help Rhode Island residents, businesses, and institutions manage their energy usage. These programs are funded by an energy efficiency charge on all customers’ gas and electric bills, in accordance with Rhode Island law.

Net Metering

Net metering allows customers with eligible renewable energy systems to receive bill credits for all power generated up to 125 percent of the on-site consumption during a billing period. Public entities (municipal, state, quasi-state) are allowed to enter into virtual net metering arrangements with renewable energy developers for up to 10 MW per project site.

Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI)

The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) is the nation’s first mandatory, market-based cap and trade program to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2). As a participating state, Rhode Island receives CO2 allowance proceeds, which are invested in a variety of consumer benefit programs, including energy efficiency, renewable energy, direct energy bill assistance and other greenhouse gas reduction programs.

Renewable Energy Fund (REF)

The Renewable Energy Fund (REF) provides grants and loan opportunities for eligible renewable energy technologies. The REF provides funding for the following program areas: small-scale solar, commercial renewable energy development, early stage commercialization, and predevelopment feasibility studies.

Renewable Energy Growth Program

The Renewable Energy Growth Program (REG Program) will support the development of 160 MW of distributed generation projects in Rhode Island between 2015 and 2019. Eligible technologies include wind, solar, hydropower, and anaerobic digestion.
